OMG Midwest’s Minnesota Group, comprised of Southern Minnesota Construction, New Ulm Quartzite Quarries, and American Concrete Products, participated in its first Relay for Life event on July 19 to benefit the American Cancer Society. With a team motto of “Crush out cancer,” “The Crushers” set a goal to raise $1,000. Through extensive fundraising efforts and a passion for helping those in need, the team surpassed its goal by a large margin, raising over $3,200. The Crushers received a Bronze Award, which signified reaching over $2,500 in money raised.

The money was raised through donations, raffles, and Friday morning bake sales. A boulder from one of the quarries was sold as a raffle item and would be delivered for free within 25 miles of the Mankato office. Rachael Eisert, a seven-year breast cancer survivor, won the boulder. Now proudly displayed in her front yard, the boulder serves as a symbol of her cancer journey and a reminder that she is a survivor. The Crushers also hosted a craft night where they painted ‘hope rocks’ and attached cancer ribbons. The hope rocks were sold on the night of the relay. Many of them were sold to children whose family is affected by cancer.

The funds raised by Relay for Life events are used by the American Cancer Society to help communities across the globe fight back against cancer. Last year, the American Cancer Society gave over 300,000 patients a ride to their treatment and its Hope Lodge Facilities housed over 260,000 patients and caregivers free of charge.

Participating in a relay of this caliber would not have been possible without such a united team effort coupled with plenty of enthusiasm and a love for the well-being of others. There were several cancer survivors on the team and they participated in walking the survivor lap. Watching hundreds of cancer survivors walk the survivor lap made the Minnesota Group realize that they really can make a difference.
