News SMCOn October 26th, a group of third-graders from St. Mary’s School got to experience the much anticipated “Rock Day”: a field trip to SMC’s Owatonna Quarry. The day began with a demonstration by geologist Matt Graham, who taught them the many uses for rocks and talked about the differences in mining sand and limestone. After the demonstration, the students headed to the bottom of the quarry for a close look at piles of rocks and minerals. They even got to collect samples of rocks to take home.

“We have been learning about the layers of the Earth, and this trip gives us a chance to get out into the real world and see a geologist and hear him speak,” said Dee Johnson, a third-grade teacher at St. Mary’s.

“I don’t think we’ve had a class yet where there has been a kid who wants to leave,” said Graham.
