We have been leading the asphalt industry in Central Iowa for over 50 years.

Who We Are

Throughout the years, our crews have completed a wide variety of projects including: highway and street paving, commercial paving projects, parking lot construction, custom asphalt milling, and chip sealing.

Many of our employees have acquired over forty years of experience in the industry. Our continuous pursuit of new technology and quality work are backed by multiple industry and community awards. Our 100+ employees are well-trained, well-respected, and take pride in doing the job right.

We began business in the late 1960s as part of Ronald Kenyon Construction Company, which later became Iowa Road Builders. The company sold to Robert Horner in the early 1980s and continued to grow throughout 90s. In 2001, Des Moines Asphalt and Paving became part of CRH, the leading vertically integrated supplier of aggregates, asphalt, and paving services in the United States.

Des Moines Asphalt and Paving is an involved, engaged civic partner in the communities where we live and work to make a difference. We strive to safeguard the health, the safety, and the environmental well-being of the neighborhoods and communities. As a result, our employees have close personal ties with local schools, nonprofit organizations, and businesses.

As a building materials company, we have the privilege of using natural resources to provide beneficial products - like aggregate and asphalt - to the world. We conduct our business with a sense of appreciation and responsibility to renew, recycle, and reuse in order to operate more efficiently, and improve the environment wherever possible. We strive to be an industry leader in policies that enable us to provide quality products more efficiently while being aware of the impacts our operations have on the environment.

Making Beneficial Products for the World

The products that we make are not only necessary for roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, but they also have many applications for improving the environment such as hydro-electric dams, wind-farms, soil stabilization, and water purification. We offer LEED certified asphalt for paving needs.

Recycling Leader

When it comes to recycling, we are leaders across Iowa in the use of recycled products to manufacture asphalt. As much as 30% of a new asphalt road can be made up of Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP). Most of our asphalt plants are able to utilize Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS), which allows the preservation of natural resources and the reuse of products that may otherwise become waste and fill up landfills.

Emission Reduction and Energy Efficiency

Most of our asphalt plants are Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) capable, which means less fuel consumption, lower emissions, and reduced fumes for the plant. We work with energy providers that are committed to providing and producing more renewable energy. We have engaged in several energy savings initiatives throughout the company utilizing more energy-efficient LED lighting as well as incorporating variable frequency drives on electric motors for pumps and other plant equipment to reduce power demand and electrical usage whenever possible.
